Butter

Storing

Store butter in the fridge, in its wrapper or in a sealed container. Transfer useable amounts to the butter dish as needed so that there’s always a small amount of soft butter to hand. Alternatively, store it in the door of the fridge. This is the warmest place in the fridge and butter stored here may be directly spreadable. Salted butter can be stored for up to 8 weeks in the fridge.

Freezing

Butter can be frozen. Cut or weigh into useable sized portions first.

Freezer life

12 months (salted) or 9 months (unsalted)

Good to know!

In ancient Ireland, butter was stored in wooden containers, buried in bogs. Occasionally, this butter is uncovered and although waxy and sometimes smelly, apparently it is still edible!
