Strawberries

Buying

Strawberries are at their best when they are in season which, depending on variety, can be anytime from May to September in Ireland. Where possible, source them locally.

Storing

Store in the fridge. To make them last longer don’t remove the green tops until right before use. Keep an eye on them and quickly remove any strawberries that are going bad.

Freezing

Freeze strawberries, whole or chopped. To avoid crushing, freeze on trays for one hour before transferring to a freezer bag.

Freezer life

up to 1 year

Using up

When in season during the summer months, they are delicious as is. If you’ve encountered a glut, prepare some jam, compote, or bake in tarts. Strawberries go particularly well with rhubarb.

Good to know!

Strawberry tops can be used to flavour water.
