The Easter chocolate season is here. Easter eggs seem to get cheaper every year and many households with children receive so much chocolate from family and friends that they end up throwing some out.

First of all, if you’re thinking of gifting chocolate this Easter, check in with parents beforehand so no child ends up buried under a mountain of Easter eggs!

Secondly, remember it doesn’t all have to be eaten Easter Week! Chocolate typically has a shelf-life of over 4 months, and while it doesn’t freeze particularly well on it’s own (see A-Z of Foods for details), it can be easily frozen when incorporated into other treats like brownies or cookie-dough.

To avoid the tragedy of thrown-out chocolate, we’ve gathered a few ideas to help you extend the life and use up these Easter treats in novel ways!

  1. Home-Made Chocolate Spread

Here’s one you might not automatically think about, but that will be both perfect for breakfast and delicious on pancakes!

  1. Easter Egg Chocolate Chip Cookies

Sugar coated chocolate eggs can be used up on top of these delicious cookies.
Bonus: don’t forget, cookie dough can be frozen! If you’re all chocced out, whip up a batch of cookie dough and freeze it for up to 6 months.

  1. Creme Egg Milkshake

  1. The Classic Chocolate Rocky Road

Use up whatever kind of chocolate you have and mix with nuts, dried fruits and biscuits. Easy peasy!

These are suggestions we found to be original, but any recipe requiring chocolate will do the trick. Hot chocolate, chocolate fondue, good old rice crispy buns or cornflake cakes, brownies, chocolate cake…there are so many different ways to use up leftover choccie treats. Plus, you can always give them away. It’s perfectly acceptable to re-gift chocolate. We’re sure you’ll find something that will convince you of saving them from the bin.
