Take the Challenge!
Each year Irish households throw out, on average, almost 250 kg of food waste. For most of us it is hard to imagine what this looks like but means that every person in the country is throwing out about 80kg of food waste each year – this is the same weight as a grown man!
While there will always be some food waste, it is estimated that at least 50% of this could be prevented saving your home as much as €700 each year.
The Stop Food Waste Challenge asks Irish households to target reducing their food waste by ¼ each month, or roughly 5 kg. If every household in Ireland did this for a year it would reduce the total amount of food wasted by nearly 90,000 tonnes and save Irish households €200 million each year.
So, go on – give yourself a challenge: trim your food waste and save your money!
